With the "adding" regular shape method you split a complex shaped pond into several regular shaped areas. By adding the volume of each regular shape you get a good estimate of the pond volume.

With the check pattern method you draw a sketch of your pond on a square graph paper and count the squares. This method let you make a good estimate of both the surface area and the volume. The guide also has a built-in drawing tool.

Measure the volume while filling the pond with water

If you do not have a water meter you can calculate the amount of water being taped into the pond. With the time method you take the time it takes to fill the pond using a constant flow of water and then calculate the pond volume.

With this method you draw a sketch of your pond on a square graph paper and cout the number of squares in the different depth-zones of the pond. In this way you can make a good estimate of both the surface area and the volume of any irregular shaped pond.

The shape of a garden pond is often irregular and it might be difficult estimate average values for length, width and depth when you compute its volume.

In order to get a more accurate result, you can divide the pond into smaller regular shaped areas and get the volume of the pond by adding the volume of each area. This technique can also be used for the depth-zones of the pond. Examples of how a complex shaped pond could be divided into regular shapes:
