Pond Volume Calculator

When selecting pond filter or when using pond water treatment products you have to know the volume of your garden pond. This calculator contains 3 different guides/methods for calculating the pond volume.

Measure the volume while filling the pond with water
If you have a water meter you can check the meter before and after the pond is filled with water. If you don't have a meter you can calculate the amount of water being taped into the pond.

With the time method you take the time it takes to fill the pond using a constant flow of water and then calculate the amount of water that has been tapped into the pond.



Estimate/calculate the volume of a pond
Sometimes you have to estimate the volume of the pond when it's already filled with water. Then you have to use an approximation of length, width and depth. Below are two guides for making a qualified estimation of the pond volume.

With the check pattern method you draw a sketch of the pond on a square graph paper. Then it's possible to calculate the volume of the pond by counting the number of squares that the pond contains. Use the build in drawing tool or draw by hand.

With the adding regular shape method you split a complex shaped pond into several regular shaped areas. By adding the volume of each regular shape you get a good estimate of the pond volume.

Step 1 of 2 - The check pattern method

The principle of this method is to draw the outline of the pond on a square graph paper and count the number of squares contained in each zone. In this way it's possible to calculate both area and the volume of an irregular shaped pond.

This guide offers two alternatives:

Step 1 of 2 - The "adding" regular shape method

The shape of a garden pond is often complex and it might be difficult to compute its volume. You have to use average values for length, width and depth. To get a more accurate result you can divide the pond into smaller regular shaped areas that is easier to compute with. This technique can also be used for the depth-zones of the pond.

You can only use this guide when you fill the pond with a constant flow of water.

Calculate the filling flow:

The amount of time taken to fill a container with water (e.g. 10 litre bucket):

Measure the time taken to fill the pond using the filling flow computed above.
